Clinical and Histopathologic Analysis of Calcifying Epithelioma

Abstract
Calcifying epithelioma of the skin is a distinct group of n,oplasms that are anatomically and clinically well defined.
Author sunm.ariz,d the clinical and histological characteristics of calcifying epithelioma on the basis of analysis of 19 cases collected at Dept. of Clinical Pathology of Korea University Hospital from Jan. 1972 to Sept. 1980.
The results were as follows:
1. Range of age was from 4 to 49 year old and more than half were under 29 years of age.
2. It occured more commonly in female.
3. The neck was the most frequent location of the tumor and it was also found on the head, upper extremity and back in descending order.
4. The size of tumor ranged from 0. 5 to 6.5cm in diameter, but the most tumors measured 0.5 to 2.0cm in diameter.
5. Histologically most of tumors were composed of two types of cells, basophilic and shadow cells, which cornified, calcified and even ossified, and fibrous connective tissue stroma with foreign body reaction.
6. As the lesion aged, the number of basophilic cells decreased with the development into shadow cells.
